A Chinese ivory Burmese Pattern chess set and draughts compendium. The Kings are pierced and carved with crown finials and masks, their knopped ovoid stems with lotus and birds.11 cm high. The Queens with finials; Bishops as mitres with human faces; Knights as horses' heads; rooks as turrets with flags. Very nice handmade chess set, probably from Kenyan. Beautifully carved pieces can be played on a circular soapstone game board decorated with hand carved incised fish. Set consist of 32 playing pieces plus board and pegged box with brass knob to store them in.
Board measures approximately 12" diameter. The chess pieces measure from 1-7/8" to 3-1/8" tall. Condition: One piece has been repaired at the neck and a small chip out of the other piece as seen in pictures other than that, mint condition... Click for details

The maker of this set is the MILTON BRADLEY COMPANY famous maker of games out of Springfield Mass.The instruction booklet is included - copyright 1923. The box is absolutely complete it has 2 dice, 144 Wood tiles in 4 trays and 116 colored wooden counting sticks in 4 smaller trays. Except for some wear and slight fading to the outside of the decorated box it is in excellent condition.
