This group of twelve (97.53BHD; 100.63B, C, D, Y, AC, AD, Ai, AJ, AV, and BG HD; and TF99.122) is made up of 11 one reales and one four reales Spanish Colonial silver cob coins minted in Lima (Peru), Potosi (Bolivia), and Mexico, and priced from $20-$125. Dating from 1694 to 1746, the reigns of Charles II, Louis I, and Philip V are represented. Two of the coins are rare due to having Costa Rica and Guatemala counterstamps. This is American Colonial or pirate money from the 18th century in the form of two pieces of eight. Cut from Spanish or Mexican 8 reale silver coins, these pieces were used as currency in North America and the Caribbean when domestic currency was unavailable. The left-hand piece measures 1 x 11/16" and it weighs 4.8 grams; the other is 7/8 x 3/4" and it weighs 7.3 grams. The two 17th century Spanish Colonial coins in this lot (AK153A and B) are priced and offered individually. The first, AK153A, is a silver one real minted in Lima, Peru, dated 1694, and from the reign of Chares II. It has an assayer mark of ‘M’. The second coin, AK153B, is a ½ real minted in Potosi, Bolivia, dated 1660, and is also from the reign of Charles II.
