This is a great ethnic necklace of African Trade Copal Resin mounted with small red felt pieces in between the beads, graduated in sizes. From Africa, Mauritania. Copal trade beads were used in the African trade since the early 19th cent. Copal is a tree resin, a younger form of tree resin than the well known fossilised Amber (it takes millions of years of transformation for the resin to become amber). Dan Mask. Côte d'Ivoire or Liberia, Early to mid-20th Century. Wooden mask representing a sacred personality, Gunyege, as worn by a community's champion foot racers in competitions. With its wide circular ocular apertures and holes for attaching fibers, this mask can be identified as Gunyege. This example simply but nicely, and thinly carved. Good patination. 11 1/2" x 5 3/4" x 3". 7 1/2 oz.
