Dan Mask. Côte d'Ivoire or Liberia, Early to mid-20th Century. Wooden mask representing a sacred personality, Gunyege, as worn by a community's champion foot racers in competitions. With its wide circular ocular apertures and holes for attaching fibers, this mask can be identified as Gunyege. This example simply but nicely, and thinly carved. Good patination. 11 1/2" x 5 3/4" x 3". 7 1/2 oz.
An important and original mask from Gouro people , a human face with horns is surrounded by 2 snakes. This mask was handled with the teeth by the dancer.
Collected in situ in the mid 20th century by an old french collector.

The face possesses great emotion; the slight asymmetry to the features is what gives this figure its personality. Helmet mask of Janus shape, showing two busts surmounted by fierce looking faces, each one very different from the other one. An exceedingly creepy Vodun ritual vessel from the Fon peoples of Benin. This rare fetish is 5-1/2” high, 5” in diameter and consists of a conglomerate of numerous carved wood figures and bundles with unknown contents, all bound together with cloth, interwoven cord and ritual material. These surround an old fluted glass mounted atop. An old ritual object with a deeply disturbing presence.
High quality pair of proud standing male and female figures from the Igbo people in Nigeria, made of strong and heavy wood and mounted on custom stands. The figures were made around 1950. Former collection of Dr. Heinz Werner Schmitt, Hamburg, Germany. Good condition with blackened patina and some cracks, no repairs.
