This is a great ethnic necklace of African Trade Copal Resin mounted with small red felt pieces in between the beads, graduated in sizes.

Copal trade beads were used in the African trade since the early 19th cent. Copal is a tree resin, a younger form of tree resin than the well known fossilised Amber (it takes millions of years of transformation for the resin to become amber). Measurement: 25 pearls, the larger 45 x 35 mm, the smallest 28 x 20 mm diameter...
An exceptional Guro heddle pulley from the Ivory Coast, West Africa. This beautifully carved example is 8-3/4” high and is decorated with a finely detailed antelope head, as well as bands of geometric designs. Lovely patina from extensive usage.
An African Mali ceremonial mask. Hand carved with applied brass strips and cowlry shells. Beautiful patina, it measures 15" high x 9" across x 5".
A heavy well cast 'bronze' figure, in traditional Benin ceremonial coral beaded costume and headress, probably made in Nigeria during the early to mid 20th Century.
Condition: excellent. The circular copper base is probably a later addition.

Dan Mask. Côte d'Ivoire or Liberia, Early to mid-20th Century. Wooden mask representing a sacred personality, Gunyege, as worn by a community's champion foot racers in competitions. With its wide circular ocular apertures and holes for attaching fibers, this mask can be identified as Gunyege. This example simply but nicely, and thinly carved. Good patination. 11 1/2" x 5 3/4" x 3". 7 1/2 oz.
An important and original mask from Gouro people , a human face with horns is surrounded by 2 snakes. This mask was handled with the teeth by the dancer.
Collected in situ in the mid 20th century by an old french collector.

nique to sub-Saharan African tribes is the fact that among the Lobi; all males carve. This explains the fact that there is such variation in quality and abundance of Lobi material. This figure is called a Bateba; this example was carved by a confident skilled craftsman. The face possesses great emotion; the slight asymmetry to the features is what gives this figure its personality. The tripartite coiffure is nicely rendered and the sides of the face have unique scarification marks...
A superbly carved Hemba fly whisk from the D.R. Congo region, ca. early 20th century. Overall length is 13”, with the hollowed out head designed to hold another object. Lovely patina from extensive usage.
Helmet mask of Janus shape, showing two busts surmounted by fierce looking faces, each one very different from the other one. The mask is made of wood covered with animal skin, with a rattan base allowing fixation to the top of the dancer's head. Beautiful dark brown glossy patina. Africa, Nigeria, Ekoi ethnic group.
