Dan Mask. Côte d'Ivoire or Liberia, Early to mid-20th Century. Wooden mask representing a sacred personality, Gunyege, as worn by a community's champion foot racers in competitions. With its wide circular ocular apertures and holes for attaching fibers, this mask can be identified as Gunyege. This example simply but nicely, and thinly carved. An exceedingly creepy Vodun ritual vessel from the Fon peoples of Benin. This rare fetish is 5-1/2” high, 5” in diameter and consists of a conglomerate of numerous carved wood figures and bundles with unknown contents, all bound together with cloth, interwoven cord and ritual material. These surround an old fluted glass mounted atop. An old ritual object with a deeply disturbing presence.
