A crab crawls out from between the folds of crackled glaze on this large Rakuzan Yaki vase enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 22 cm (9 inches) tall, 21 cm (8 inches) diameter and in excellent condtion. Legend holds that Matsudaira Sadanaga, lord of Matsuyama Castle, created the first Rakuzan-yaki decorated with its ubiquitous water crab in his garden kiln (Niwa-yaki) in the early 19th century. This Rakuzan-yaki is not to be confused with the Rakuzan yaki from Matsue.
