Shiko Munakata (1903 ~ 1975)

Dated: April 11, 1965.
Leo Sirota (1885-1965) was one of the world's most famous pianists. Munakata was his friend and produced this print shortly after Sirota's death.
Edition: Not known. A color version of this design exists.
Signed: "Shiko" in Japanese; "Munakata" in English.

Oversized limited-edition Japanese sosaku hanga woodblock print by Okiie Hashimoto (1899-1993) titled "Evening Garden No. 16." The bottom margin is pencil-signed, titled in kanji, dated 1960, and numbered 16/60. The artist's red seal is at the lower left corner of the image. The lower right margin holds a black 5-character self-published mark. Paper: 22 3/4" x 18 1/4" (image: 21 1/4" x 16 3/4"). Very good overall condition. The margin corners are creased. From a Scottsdale, AZ estate.

Okii Hashimoto, Japanese (1899-1993), woodblock print titled in pencil in the left margin, pencil signed on the lower margin, the artist’s printed signature on right and red seal on the lower left of the print. Probably from the 1960’s. The paper is 23 ½ b7 17 ½ inches (59.5 x 44.5 cm), image 21 ½ by 15 5/8 inches (54.5 x 39.5 cm)...

Japanese print of a seated Buddha by the artist Shiko Munakata (1903-1975). A member of the sosaku-hanga movement and the mingei folk arts movement in Japan. As a young artist, Munakata was influenced by Vincent Van Gogh and studied oil painting. Later he was inspired by Buddhist religious imagery which became the main subject matter of many of his prints...
