An interesting modern, abstract koro. The compressed sphere with elliptical, off centered opening. A warm, brown temmoku glaze with darker brown glaze dripping from the top and stopping in controlled fashion above a well - continuing to form the unglazed foot in ogee fashion. An artist seal (three or four stylized Kanji characters within an oval) is impressed into the concave base near the foot rim. Very good condition. Some burnt on kiln residue on the foot goes to 'wabi'...

Japanese 20th century large porcelain vase by FUJII SHUMEI. The large bulbous form is decorated in a beautifully detailed mountain landscape with many trees. Signed SHUMEI on bottom. FUJII SHUMEI is a famous porcelain artist who exhibits at the prestigious annual NITTEN show in Japan. No storage box. The vase measures 12 1/2" tall and has a 11" diameter.

This doll is a Hakata clay doll, “Matsukaze” design by the well known Japanese artist, Yoshio Matsuoka.

Matsukaze is a story of two beautiful sisters who met and fell in love with a young courtier in exile at the seashore of Suma Bay. The sisters were “shio kumi”, the saltwater bearers who made their living by ladling seawater (before it was boiled down to salt). Matsukaze is the name of the older sister and literally means “wind through the pine trees”...

American artist Guy Diehl, born in 1949 in Pennsylvania, is most famously known for his still life paintings and prints. Diehl's family moved to California in 1960, where he began taking courses in art at Diablo Valley College in 1968. He moved onto study under Mel Ramos, one of the originators of figurative pop art at Cal State University, Hayward. Diehl earned his master's degree from San Francisco State and graduated with honors in 1976...

1971 was a big year for Haku Maki He did over 100 different images of Japanese prints. Some, like this one, were big prints--this one, Poem 71-91, is 30.5 Inches x 15.25. It is 68/108. This is the abstract kanji for Mu or Nothing and he titled it Nothing The kanji starts at the top then cascades down to the final four strokes at the bottom. From a distance it appears to me like the steps going from top to bottom of a building on a Chinese hill on the Yangzi...

A Japanese mezzotint print by artist Katsunori Hamanishi (b. 1949-present). He graduated with an art degree from Tokai University in 1973 and has since been living in Kyoto to work on his printmaking.

This mezzotint is titled "Play-I", numbered 20/70 of its series, and hand signed by the artist in pencil.

Japanese Late 20th Century (1995) porcelain charger by master ceramicist, Ono Hakuko (1925-1996). The charger has the design of fern leaves and blossoms done in Ono Hakuko's signature style with gold leaf underglaze. The charger is signed "Haku" on the bottom. A contemplative and artistic rendering of a lotus leaf bowl with deteriorated edges. The lotus is a symbol of purity, beauty and a metaphor in teaching Buddhism. Fukagawa Japanese porcelain small saucer decorated with a phoenix in flight among modified scrolling karakusa design. Karakusa is a stylized arabesque pattern said to have originated in ancient Greece and introduced to Japan in the 8th century through China.
