Schoolhouse Quilt; Circa 1930; Pennsylvania

I have never seen a Schoolhouse quilt that included the bells as this one does. Primitive in some ways but sophisticated in others. Has nice detailed embroidery including clappers to the bells and sashing on the windows. The choice of solid colors and straight forward houses give this an abstract quality. A small smudge and a worn spot are visible inclose-up photos. Measures 55" x 83". Circa 1930; Pennsylvania origin.

The complex Philadelphia Pavement pattern is not often seen, particularly done by the Lancaster County Amish. This version is in pristine, unwashed condition. It has a wonderful contrast of lights and darks, made more intense by the shadings of blue blocks. Measures 86" x 88", large enough for a queen size bed. Lancaster County, Pa. origin; circa 1930.

This is a most sophisticated, subtle wool Log Cabin Kaleidoscope pattern. It is made entirely of men's wool suiting fabrics in shades of grey, brown, tan and black. Many of the fabrics have flecks of red or tiny bright stripes that animate the overall piece. Pristine, un-used condition. The backing fabric is as bold a print as the front is quiet. Measures 68" x 69". Carroll County, Maryland; circa 1930.
