Fine Naga cotton “loramhousou” blanket from the Angami group of the Naga people in India. This piece is very unusual in that it has been vegetable dyed a light brown tan color (all others I have seen from this group are white), also the size is quite large for such a piece (1.92m/6’4”ft length and 1.8m/3.5ft width). In excellent condition with no rips or fraying. The patterns are woven in with silk. Approximately 40 years old.

Symbols in this nicely-framed late Qing or early Repulican embroidery include the peony (wealth and distinction), the Buddhist sign of the endless fish knot, the bat (symbol of good luck and happiness), and the butterfly (a female symbol). The central peony, as well as the key symbols in the corners, shows forbidden stitch.
