We have a number of these “Mao boxes”. This is an attractive wooden box with a gesso painted and lacquered design. About ½ have their original metal work, the others have reproduction hardware. This is our only, Chinese, merchant class family, children’s rocking chair. It dates from the mid-20th century, circa: 1945. It has a slatted split bamboo backing and a new woven bamboo seat all hung on a wooden frame. It is in good condition and has had the support “strapping” for the seat rewoven in the last 2 - 5 years. The bamboo backing is original to the chair while the seat appears to have been replaced by the Chinese dealer with new remnant, woven bamboo from a roll. It clearly has been... Click for details
