Twins are revered in Yoruba culture, so when a twin dies, an Ibeji figure is carved. It becomes the surrogate twin and is bathed and fed and rubbed with camwood powder and indigo for as long as divination prescribes. This fine Ibeji is exquisitely carved and finely patinated with traces of red from the camwood powder that was rubbed on it, and traces of blue from the indigo that was applied to its hair. Excellent Condition. Height: 10 inches (26cm).
