Reliquary head, of typical style, surmounting a large and long neck with a flat bottom. Wood, with fine glossy dark-brown patina. Small bronze eyes. Africa, Gabon, Fang Peoples. Height: 16 1/2" (42 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and age, erosion all over, chips in some areas, otherwise very good condition.

A superb Bwami Society figure from the Lega tribe of the Congo region, 15-1/2" tall. He is depicted standing, with his wedge-shaped head sinking into the hunched shoulders. The hands are resting on his belly. The facial features are enhance with white kaolin and a yellow pigment. A fine old example in excellent condition.

Brought out of Liberia in the mid 20th century by a mining engineer, this African Medicine Man's or Shaman's shirt (96.71HD) was once worn by a member of the Poro Society, a pan-tribal, secret organization of which little is generally known. Small ritual cup of rounded shape, with two oval openings. A tiny head has been carved in relief on each side, and each head is framed in an incised geometric design.
