Figures were used by the Songye people to protect the village, promote fertility and well-being and to defeat enemies and evil spirits. Large figures were owned and used by the village community, smaller figures were owned by families and were used in the same way. Male figure with large triangular head, long torso with protruding navel and small arms, short legs. Brass rings at ears (one making a long chain), navel and around abdomen. Wood, fine reddish-brown dark patina. Africa, D.R. Congo, Azande Peoples. Height: 9" (22,3 cm). Age crack along the left side of the torso, otherwise very good condition.
