Bakuba Peoples, Congo; this is a Rare Old Noblewoman's skirt, worn at Court, celebrations and festivals, and worn only by these "kolm" or titleholders. There are some 130 named "kolm" at the Bakuba court, and women number among them of course. Measuring an impressive thirteen and one-half feet in length (13' 6 1/2" - 413 cm.), this has been hand-woven from raffia palm fiber (raffia viniferis), the most difficult of all natural fibers to work with; interestingly, among the Bakuba, it is the men ... Bakuba Peoples, Bashoba Shoowa sub-tribe, Congo. Although newer than most of our other Bakuba textiles, this is a superb Shoowa weaving; the finest that has ever been done. The master textile artisan who created this particular piece displayed her superlative skill by showing a 'sampling' of patterning to the center. Showing superb Shoowa deep cut-pile technique, flat weaving technique to the border edging, etc., this superb textile measures approximately 43" x 17 1/4" (109 x 44 cm.)

Bakuba Peoples, Congo. This is an excellent example of the work of the Shoowa (also known as the Bashoba), as they excelled in the technique of cut-pile work, and theirs was - and is - the longest, most plush. 21 1/2" x 19 1/2" (54 x 49.5 cm.)
