A superb Lwalwa wood mask

This male mask, called 'shifola', shows the shortened nose and curved forehead of its type. It is also analogous to a type of owl whose beak resembles its nose shape. There is a hole between the nose and lips where a cord was once inserted and knotted. This was the means of keeping the mask on the dancer, his teeth tightly clenching the cord to hold the mask against his face. These masks may have been danced during hunting rites. Male figure with large triangular head, long torso with protruding navel and small arms, short legs. Brass rings at ears (one making a long chain), navel and around abdomen. Wood, fine reddish-brown dark patina. Africa, D.R. Congo, Azande Peoples. Height: 9" (22,3 cm). Age crack along the left side of the torso, otherwise very good condition.
