Bold cobalt blue and yellow Indian drum from the Cochiti Pueblo of New Mexico, purchased in 1954 from Al Momaday at a Pow Wow in Oklahoma. Momaday was not the maker but the seller.

This fine old drum has been in one home all these years.

Standing 16" tall by 10-11" across, it is a hollowed out log of cottonwood or aspen, covered with raw hide... Click for details

The mellow golden color of the aged yucca and the strong black devils claw design make a striking graphic basketry bowl. Papago Indian, circa 1930s, the weave is strong and the walls are firm, just like a bowl. The modified "Wheels of Life" design gives us the date. It was not used after 1938. To the Papago and Pima Indians of Arizona it represents the dust devils which are the breath of the ancestors.

The only information that came with this lethal-looking weapon was a note that it was from the William R. Nice old handmade silver pillbox, the lid decorated with a motif of sawtooth crescents flanking a diamond form. The slightly domed box lid is hinged with the old style Navajo applied strap mounts. Nice pillbox size, it measures 1 3/8 inches in length, 1 inch in width and 3/8 inch in height. The piece has no signatures or markings as is usual on the old pieces, but is guaranteed to be coin or sterling silver. Looks like an old Fred Harvey or Route 66 piece and is in excellent condition.

An impressive graduated reindeer antler horn necklace from Greenland ca. 1950. The necklace constitutes of 30 double drilled beads that are stringed with two wires. The necklace finishes with two barrel-shaped beads and a pin of walrus tooth and a reindeer antler horn bead that is used as a lock. Length: ca. 48 cm. Weight 60 grams.
