The carving is large, impressive and well rendered in 360º, dramatically capturing a realistic moment in the life of the eskimo people. This piece is well rendered in 360º by an obviously talented craftsman who understands form and creating 3 dimensional pieces. This was likely carved in the 1960s and retailed by Canada Art, with the sticker long gone, as is typical of these items. Measures 9.5"x 3.25"x 5.5" and is in excellent condition with a minor few little marks. Very well scratch/engrave signed to the ba... Click for details

This heavy, 9 ½” long black soapstone carving (BB66) depicts a powerful Eskimo hunter atop an ice flow below which lies two wounded seals. Two ivory or bone implements (spear, knife, harpoon?) may not be in the location intended by the artist, and both of the pieces are damage... Click for details

So what’s a ‘narwhal’? According to Webster, it’s ‘a large, arctic cetacean, having in the male a long, straight, spiral tusk, and valued for its oil and ivory’. Okay! So what’s a ‘cetacean’? Well, good old Webster says ‘of or belonging to an order of aquatic mammals, especially those of a fishlike form with teeth conic or absent, including the whales, dolphins, and porpoises’. ‘Nuff of that! At any rate, this little character (WJF1231), carved in walrus ivory and polished by Alaskan Native Amer... Click for details
