Here we offer a very handsome example of a 'gigante' head, used in, and during, certain festivals and parades in Guatemala, often as the head of a 'giant' comprised of two men under a large cloak or cape. We're not sure if this head was actually used as such, though it seems it may have been. Purchased in Guatemala over 20 years ago, this is one of the last of two dozen in the collection to be let go.
This piece measures just under one foot tall.

Vintage wooden nicho with Cristo figure. I purchased this from a gentleman who had traveled up with goods from Oaxaca to sell in a small tianguis outside of Mexico City. The wooden nicho retains its rich red paint ~ most likely created with a vegetable or insect base. It also reveals some of its original golden paint highlights. This Cristo appears to be created out of a cornstalk paste ~ which I find quite interesting because this traditional art form must have spread to the Oaxacan artist from... Click for details

One the largest, most delightful vintage wooden toys from Mexico that I have had the pleasure of coming across. This ca. late 1950s-late 1960s mechanical toy captures a group of five skeletons out for a bit of carousing in a local taverna. They are smoking, drinking, playing guitar, and generally enjoying themselves during their annual return visit to this earthly life. A little metal bar and crank on the right hand side can be turned, and when turned, hands start to gyrate, feet start to bounce... Click for details

This charming and naive piece comes from an estate sale in Mexico City and is the work of Sr. Rebollard, who was an attorney that lived in Mexico City. I have had this piece in my personal collection for several years now.
I was told that as a younger man or boy, Sr. Rebollard had lived through the Mexican Revolution. His memories of the hardship and tragedy brought to his village by the Revolution became the subject matter for many of his paintings. Francisco (Pancho) Villa was then, and mus... Click for details

Vintage Mexican Tin Nicho, Frame with Original Glass. Very nicely executed vintage tin frame or nicho with balanced, detailed stamp work throughout ca. 1930s-50s. Near miraculous retention of the original, wonderfully wavey glass. All parts in very good condition with the exception of charming, slight curl to the very top of frame and a Missing pin close -- however any longer, tailor straight pin would do the trick. Very nicely sized at 17" long by 9 3/4 wide (without ears) and with an inner win... Click for details

Pair of vintage Mexican gold leaf angel wings. Beautiful carved wood finished in traditional estafada and gold leaf, ca. 1800s-1940s. Finely carving implies the presence of layers and layers of appropriately lavish feathering in this pair of lovely wings. Two hand lathed pieces of wood secured with hand made nails with irregular shape to heads. In very good condition with cracking throughout, some signs of early renovation and conservation. One pair of wings has lost the outside edges of the win... Click for details

Rather wonderful, super-sized vintage tin nicho from Mexico. Marvelous stamp work almost seem to crown the image of the well beloved Virgin of Guadalupe that this early tin Mexican nicho contains. Oversize dimensions measure 25 1/2" by 15" (including the tin corona and 'ears'). Original glass bears a crack (as photographed.) Fine piece whose tin works sings to sing an exaltation.
