A fascinating late 20th century Choora, the traditional side-knife of Afghani men. This example measures 12 inches overall, and has a thick T-cross section spine. Aluminum bolsters compliment horn and acrylic or plexiglass scales, under which appear pieces of printed Indian advertisements. Just as we exoticize arabic scripts, the Afghani find interest in latin scripts. Leather covered wood sheath with colorful synthetic decorations. I'd date this piece to the 1970's. An intriguing ethnographic e... Click for details

This unique Iranian brass vase has a traditional Ghalamzani (Carved Persian Metalwork) design. The Persepolis scene depicting ancient Persia is a typical theme. Meticulously hand carved, the fabrication of this type of metalwork is a dying art. Measuring 18" tall by 10" across, and weighs six pounds, this piece is surprisingly solid. This piece is estimated to be made in Iran 40 to 60 years ago.

Three fish made of 47 tiles of lazurite (lapis lazuli) form this unusual necklace from Turkmenistan. The brilliant blue lapis used in this piece most likely was mined in neighboring Afghanistan, one of the world's
main sources of lazurite. Lapis tiles forming the fish are unpolished and scored on each side with fine lines to represent the shimmer of fish in the water. Each tile has two horizontal internal holes to allow the piece to be double strung. Small lapis beads cover the string between t... Click for details
