Lavender jade is carved into a figure of Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva revered in China as the goddess of mercy. Guanyin stands on the head of a dragon that curves up and behind her, with the tail curving over her head to create a halo. The figure, shown here hanging on a chain as a pendant, is carved on both sides. The lavender hue of the jade is most pronounced across the bottom of the piece where the jade has the greatest depth for the carving of the dragon head with a ball in front of it...
