A CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING FROM THE SHANGHAI SCHOOL: MAGPIE ON PRUNUS BRANCHES BY SHI WAY SHYY (1901). An energetic and spirited black ink scroll painting competently executed in the bold spontaneous strokes characteristic of the Shanghai school of Chinese brush painting. The subject matter is a magpie perched on prunus branches depicted in late winter bloom. A Chinese silk embroidery e. 20th century. Two foo dogs in a floral environment, one white the other gold/golden brown. Fantastic workmanship in embroidery on a microscopically thin piece of silk. To hold the piece together a likewise thin paper has been applied on the back. From the photos of the back we observe that paper has been applied after the embroidery was finished since the stitching does not go through the paper! Fine brush painting of a tiger, signed Li Shou Lin dated 1978. Painted in the traditional Qing style using water color and ink mounted on silk and heavy paper. Mounted dimensions L: 172cm/68in and H: 85cm/33in, dimensions of painting only L: 137cm/54 and H: 68cm/27in. In excellent codition, please note the turned up edge in the lower left corner is just the result of it being constantly rolled up and refusing to lie flat while photographing.
