Two large hui mo ink cakes made from pines that grow on Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province. The factory has over 7,800 antique mold plates, which are considered a national treasure, for making ink sticks and ink cakes. Made from one of these molds, we don’t know the exact age of our ink cakes, except that they are seasoned (18 years) and I have had them for several years, therefore we are pricing them as 1980 pieces. This inlayed Chinese ebony brush holder is 7” high and 6 ½” in diameter. It depicts a Shou Lao (god of longevity) holding a cane; a young boy carrying a flower basket stands behind him. Another young boy wearing a red robe is leading a deer cart filled with flowers and plants and walks in front of Shou Lao and his companion. The inlayed materials are dyed coral, mother of pearl, lacquer and hard stone. It is a 1950’s product. Aside from small age cracks, it is in great condition.

DESCRIPTION: A small scholar’s calligraphy box of solid brass that includes an ink stone within the inner lid. The top of the outer lid is stamped with an engraving of Chinese characters. Inside this lid is a thin, oval ink stone surface held in place by an inner rim. A nice portable way to carry necessary writing accoutrements, the lower portion of the box was used to hold ink cakes and is lined with copper.
