A very important mask figuring a realistic man face. Only the eyes are pierced throught with small round holes, old polychromia dark green black and red, the mouth is lightly smiling. This mask belongs to tribes from indian-nepal border, possibly a mask from the Ramayana theater from Rajbansi people but not sure as not typical of Rajbansi art. A very nice, rare and beautiful butter box, the top is carved in a single piece of wood showing a short-legged man riding a roughly carved cow. Few original samples of such boxes are known, this box is coming from bothia people from Trisuli district (central Nepal). It is likely that the inside has been cleaned, light brown patina of use, age can be around 40 to 50 years. Hard wood, diameter 3 ˝ inches (9 cm), height 8 1/6 inches (22 cm).

An usual decorated Ghurra mixing both traditional patterns such as the national bird peacock and the buffalo symbol of work ans success with the helicopter symbolizing the modern world. The top shows a stylized open house. Note also the thick encrusted black patina, indicating a good age likely very close to 50 years. This ghurra is coming from Rukkum district. Height 10 1/3 inches (26 cm), wide 2 3/4 inches 7 cm. The piece is nicely mounted on an iron stand.

A simple but very typical figure from the remote Karnali district for more complete information and to see similar quality of figures, one can consult the only catalog devoted to this field : La Statuaire Archaique de l'Ouest du Népal, R. Vanuxem Paris 2006 ( text in english). This kind of figures are associated with animist cult of protection of house or village. This figure shows a rather usual style for an Himalayan carving, it is a very fine stylized simple figure showing a rather modern design. The strength of the figure comes from the combination of geometrical shapes and carving giving a strong symmetry. This figures has been collected from Bothia or Magar people in the very remote district of Mugu. Very hard and dark wood as often the case with Mugu pieces. A typical mompa mask showing a ridged faced probably a Brokpa the local name for Yak shepherd. Mopa people are located in Aranuchal praddesh (East of India). The mask show a black patina made with a color mixture according to the usual way of making Mompa Mask. A very rough mask with a powerful spirit, this mask has been collected from the Magar community in the remote district of Humla. Minimal carving, just eyes, noose and mouth are combined with a long thin noose on an elongated shape. Very hard wood, black patina with traces of glue and few hairs, obvious signs of use and age, circa mid 20th. Height 35 cm, very good condition. The mask is nicely presented on an iron stand
