Japanese mid 20th century cylindrical shaped bamboo flower basket by basket master, TANABE CHIKUUNSAI II. TANABE CHIKUUNSAI II, from the Osaka area, lived from 1910 to 1999. This basket is signed by the artist and comes with TOMOBAKO, its original wooden artist signed storage box. Also comes with bamboo flower container. The basket measures 17 1/2" tall and 3 7/8" in diameter at the top.

Japanese mid-late 20th century hanging bamboo flower basket by basket master, IIZUKA SHOKANSAI. Iizuka Shokansai, lived from 1919 to 2004. The basket has a small handle from which the basket can be hung in back. The basket is loosely woven with medium sized strips of bamboo and a little wisteria branch at the bottom. The body of this ikebana basket has been woven in a basic twill plaiting and overlaid with vertical strips of richly colored nemagaridake bamboo. A single piece of round bamboo has been brilliantly shaped to serve as the handle and extend down both sides to become an integral part of the vertical design.

This early to mid-1900s sculptural ikebana basket takes the form of a Japanese lantern. The hexagonal base is supported by bamboo-root stalks with bamboo root incorporated into the rim and handle. Intricately woven rattan knots and stitches provide strength, attach elements and serve as an important decorative accent. Illegible signature on the bottom. Minor damage to a few strips on the underside. (See photos)

Beneath a layer of vertical strips of bamboo lies a carefully constructed body that functions as a support structure to this early to mid-1900's ikebana basket. It has been woven in what is referred to as a lozenge pattern. The symmetry of this piece has been complemented by a wide band of natural vine woven horizontally through the base. Illegible signature on the bottom. Excellent condition.
