This lovely Japanese split bamboo ikebana basket or “hanakago” was crafted in round form and dates to the early Showa period. Strips of different widths and different shades of brown bamboo are inserted diagonally into the body structure to produce a powerful appeal. The handle is made from twisted bamboo cordage entwined around two strips of bamboo. Since the sixteenth century, woven baskets for flowers have been favorites for use in the tea ceremony. This flower arranging basket is double-walled. The inside layer is woven in a lozenge plaiting technique and the outer layer is crafted in 1/16 inch vertical strips. The rim and base illustrate a twining technique. The signature carved on the bottom is illegible. Early-mid 20th century. Excellent condition except for minor wear to the interlocking knot at the top of the handle. Dimensions: 17" x 10".
