This is an exquisite large, signed bamboo basket made in Japan in the early-mid 20th century. It is done in the Japanese style (i.e., not Chinese style). The artisan, Chiku-yuu-sai, began at the bottom with a simple one-over, one-under weave. To make the sides of the basket, he gathered and tied several strips of bamboo into large open knots. Japanese 20th century bamboo flower basket by master basket maker, CHIKU-UNSAI II (1910 - 1999). The basket is woven with extremely fine strips of bamboo in a finely and tightly woven pattern. The basket is done in a cylindrical form with 2 long "ears" coming out of each side. The basket entitled "BOTH EARS" and is signed CHIKU-UNSAI by the artist CHIKU-UNSAI II. Comes with TOMOBAKO, original wooden artist signed box. The basket measures 9" tall, 23" wide and has a diameter of 5".

It has a warm, chocolate brown patina. Dates from the first half of the 20th century. Signed: Shouzan (or Shoushou) saku (made by Shouzan). In excellent condition. No breakage at all.
