The mid section is cylindrical done with wide strips of bamboo and the handle is formed from the lip with additional bamboo branches added for variety. Unsigned. The basket measures 17" tall, with a square base of 7 1/2" by 7 1/2", a middle section with a 5 1/4" diameter and a top that is 6 1/4" across.

This is a wonderfully handcrafted Japanese bamboo basket dating from the early to mid-20th century. It has a short bamboo insert (natural color) for water and flowers. I like to imagine it hanging on the wall, with a single flower. It could also be appreciated as a sculptural object of sublime beauty. When placed on a table, it rests at an angle, as if napping. It is not signed.
