Measuring 13 3/4" high, and 5" across, this imposing gentleman is displaying the cross which is hanging on a silk cord around his neck. The subject matter seems to be quite unusual. Condition generally quite good, very minor spots on the front, and some rubbing on the back. Japan, c. 1960.

This charming Japanese gosho ningyo (“palace doll”), with chubby arms and legs outstretched, holds a rattle-type toy in his right hand while he crawls on his stomach. Early 20th century. His one-piece clay body is finished in white gofun (crushed oyster shell), and his facial features are well modeled and delicately hand painted in wonderful detail.
