This hyotan has a noh or kabuki face on the outside and a nice storage cavern inside. It's wonderfully sound in spite of its age. It's an arresting piece with the jaunty stem on top and humorous face on the front. The storage area is clean and usable.
If gourds bring luck, as Japanese tradition holds, then this one ought to be a serendipity windfall! Smaller gourds are generally vessels for sake or oil, and larg... Click for details

Auspicious figures were often used as shapes for saving boxes in Japan. Good-luck images, such as Daruma, Daikoku (god of wealth) and Ebisu (god of commerce) were common. This mid-1900’s heavy clay bank is shaped as Daruma with facial features of Daikoku. There is an old repair across the back.
