This is a vintage Japanese kokeshi doll. The body is made of a solid piece of keyaki (paulownia) wood. The head, also keyaki, is attached w/a dowel. Has a very sweet face. Signed.

This delightful little house and garden tableau contains an incredibly detailed miniature Japanese tea house surrounded by a twig fence adjoined at the corner by a bamboo garden gate. Early to mid-20th century. The house has movable sliding shoji screen doors and windows and a large removable overhanging hipped roof. Being offered here is an unusual pair of carved plaques. One shows "Raijin" (thunder god) and the other "Fujin" (wind god), two Buddhist deities derived from ancient Indian Hinduism. Wonderfully depicted with lots of animation, they are done on zelkova (keyaki), a heavy, super-hard wood. Carving such detail into this wood could not have been done by anyone other than a highly skilled artisan. As well, the artisan had to be familiar with Buddhist iconography for these two deities. This small sake cup (guinomi) was made by the Okinawan potter Kinjo Toshio (around 71 yrs. old), who is the son of National Living Treasure Kinjo Jiro (d. 2004). It is done in the traditional trademark Tsuboya style of Okinawan pottery. On a stoneware body, it has a fish motif done in a soft blue glaze. This cup was likely done in the Yomitan "kinjo kiln," the same one his father Jiro used.

Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 7". This is an example of "Goroujou" tradition of Iwate Prefecture. It is also a rare example of extant pre-WWII kokeshi. It was made at Yumoto Onsen by the artisan, Fujiwara Masagoro, who was born in Meiji 16 (1883!) and passed away at the age of 64 on June 12th, 1947 (Showa 22.) Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 3.75". This is an example of the "Naruko-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. This particular shape was called an "ezuko" (basket child) in the local Miyagi vernacular. The artisan was Sakurai Shouji, who was born on January 1st, 1927 (Showa 2.) It is not dated, but was most likely made during the 1960's or 1970's. It was made by the artisan, Oonuma Hideo, who was born on February 17, 1930 (Showa 5.) It is dated September 15th, Showa 50 (1975,) but it is not clear if this was a production date signed by the maker, or a purchase date signed by the collector. SOLD 
Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 7.5". This is an example of kokeshi made in Fukushima Prefecture, other than its better known cousin of the "Tsuchiyu" tradition. This was made in 1968 at Takayu Onsen (Takayu Hot Spring) by the artisan, Shinogi Toshio, when he was 37 years old. Shinogi-san was born on September 3rd, Showa 6 (1931).
