These wonderful early 20th century Japanese house roof terminal decorations, called "onigawara” or ridge end tiles, were once mounted at both ends of the clay ridge cap atop of the roof of an old Japanese house and were used for both decoration and as an amulet. This mid-1900’s ikebana container has been crafted of squared bamboo with a cloud-like pattern, a technique that developed in the Kyoto area during the 1920’s. The two culms have been joined by bamboo rods. An unidentified signature is carved on one side. Good condition except for a hairline crack extending down the inner and outer sides of the smaller piece.

Two (2)miniature IKO made in Japan. Just like the larger IKO which were originally used to hang & display Kimono; these smaller (but painstakingly made to the same proportions) IKO's can now be used for jewelry to hang necklaces and earrings in a unique and tasteful way!
J-89 has mother of pearl inlay and J-90 has three painted cranes on the bottom panel.
