This whimsical lacquered red papier-mache figure of an ox is known as an “aka-beko” which, literally translated, means red calf. Mid-20th Century. Richly decorated hagoita paddle featuring a court lady dressed in brightly colored silk brocade attire and holding a hobby horse. Early Showa period. The reverse is painted with bamboo and a sprig with white blossoms and red berries. The figure of the lady wears a heavily padded silk brocade kimono decorated in gold and silver.
