A Japanses Kamakura-Bori Round Kogo with Prunus

This is a lovely round lacquer box (kogo) made in the Kamakura-bori technique. It has a design of prunus blossom and buds- on a webbed background achieved by chipping away the spaces between the webbing. The kogo measures 3 ½” diameter by 7/8” thick and is in excellent condition. We date it to the late Meiji to early Showa period, circa 1910-1935.

A small domed-lacquer box decorated with a Rimpa inspired image by Kamisaka Sekka. A solitary figure views the world from his lead thatched hut, the design performed with various qualities of gold, mother of pearl, lead and silver. Within a rice stalk rises over the gold interior. Elegant lacquer suzuribako is in fine condition. Gold lacquer, or makie is applied in a bamboo motif on the cover. Clouds of fine gold flecks float behind the bamboo. The effect is reminiscent of tortoise-shell.

Gold, silver and color makie on the Yakigiri, the surace of the Kiri-wood or paulownia-wood is burned with fire. The interior is lacquered with Negoro style, the underlayer of black lacquer showing through the red outerlayer in random. This Suzuribako is in sets with Suzuri (ink stone) and copper Suiteki (water dropper). Mid Showa era (1926-1988). Measurements about : 9 5/8" (24.3cm) by 6 3/8" (16cm) and 1 3/8" (3.5cm) tall. It is in good condition and comes with original wooden box.
