A rare Japanese export tray from the late Meiji (1868-1912) to early Taisho (1912-26) period. It is of a red cinnebar lacquer and deeply carved with medallions and rondels of decorative themes carved on stippled ground. The center oval is a very fanciful dragon with the pearl of wisdom. Two rondels show phoenixes; four depict lotus blossom in cross section and two are pomegranites I think. The bottom is of black lacquer (You see some green felt pads). There are handles on the side and incis... Click for details

Beautiful Japanese Wajima lacquer stand with gold maki-e painting in a nashi-ji background. This particular kind of
nashiji lacquer is know as PEAR skin. The quality is good
though perhaps different from older lacquers in the use of a brownish
nashiji and the colors in the decoration. The use of brown rather than
bright sparkling nashiji was often done in the Taisho (1912-1926) and the beginning of the
Showa eras and was probably intended to invoke a feeling of old lacquer in a

The dimensions of the comb are 1 1/4 inches and 3 1/4 inches, pin 5 3/4 inches long.

This well designed early to mid-20th century container is decorated with a pair of Noh Drama masks. They have been deeply carved and then lacquered in layers to create a two-toned effect. The interior is done in black lacquer and the bottom has been woven in a basic twill plaiting--an interesting contrast to the carved texture of the box. It is in excellent condition, except for minor signs of wear on the inside. Dimensions: 6½” x 6” x 3”.

Quality, Japanese lacquered wood kimono hanger. The hanger comes in the box with the old tissue paper inside. The writings on the box and the tissues (old with lots of storage stains - appeared new in the photos) indicate that it was "Made by Wajima", pre WWII. Wajima lacquer has been know for the best for it's superior quality. Very light (kiri wood inside?). Taisho to early Showa, 1920 to 1940. The condition is new (stayed in the box without being used). 25" long, 5/8" in diameter. ... Click for details
