Seven lacquer plates have a graceful peony motif in soft colors. The leaves and stems are in higher relief than the blossoms and buds. The lacquer is applied to plates of turned wood, and some of the irregularities and/or grain of the wood can be discerned beneath the lacquer. This is a lovely rectangular lacquer box (kogo) made in the Kamakura-bori technique. It has a design of two irises - or possibly orchids - on a webbed background achieved by chipping away the spaces between the webbing. The kogo measures 4 ¼” long by 3” wide by 1 ¾” deep and is in excellent condition. We date it to the late Meiji to Taisho period, circa 1910-1925.

A very fine and beautiful, square, black lacquer tray for an incense burner (korobon) to be used in the tea ceremony. Decorated on top with a light, reddish-orange design to emulate a hazy moon among clouds. On four legs and w. delicate brass fittings at the corners. Signed kiri-box with the artist´s name Hyoeto and dating, Showa 3 (1928). H 2,5 cm, 25,7 cm square. Condition: Excellent.

A pair of koi swim in elegant grace beneath an overhanging Japanese maple. Two trays are available, priced individually. The trays are 14-3/8" square and 1-1/4" high. Their condition is very good; only minimal scuffs are present and are difficult to discern. Close inspection also reveals intricately detailed scales on the fish. Probably Showa period, ca. mid-century.

Characters from a Noh Theatre play are depicted on this striking lacquer vase. The old man and woman with their rake and broom are tending a magnificent pine tree under a full moon. Shell inlay adds texture to the pine bark. Cranes fly above and one approaches the couple on the ground as a tortoise emerges from the sea. Dates from Showa 49, or 1974. Has some scuffs and a small dent but no breaks cracks or chips in the lacquer.... Click for details

A mid 20th century Showa period set of Mukozuke dishes in red lacquer with black lacquer designs in low relief. Each of the dishes has a different motif – different plant and floral designs – iris, thistles, etc. On the base of each there are moths or butterflies in the same black lacquer – with a different number and placement of these on each of the four plates. Mokuzuke were used to serve food during a formal tea gathering. Each dish measures 4 ½” diameter and are ¾” high on their footed base... Click for details

Japanese mid 20th century pair of lacquer KOI and lacquer stand. The large carp is done in black lacquer and the smaller carp is done in red lacquer. The pair of carp are on a stand made of the pair. The stand is done in a greenish colored lacquer stand with shell inlaid side. Made by lacquer artist SUMIHIRO KINOSHITA (born 1931). The black carp measures 30" long, 5 1/4" tall and 3 1/4" deep. The red carp measures 26" long, 4 1/4" tall and 2 1/2" deep.
