The lacquer is applied to plates of turned wood, and some of the irregularities and/or grain of the wood can be discerned beneath the lacquer. A very fine and beautiful, square, black lacquer tray for an incense burner (korobon) to be used in the tea ceremony. Decorated on top with a light, reddish-orange design to emulate a hazy moon among clouds. On four legs and w. delicate brass fittings at the corners. Signed kiri-box with the artist´s name Hyoeto and dating, Showa 3 (1928). H 2,5 cm, 25,7 cm square. Condition: Excellent.

A pair of koi swim in elegant grace beneath an overhanging Japanese maple. Two trays are available, priced individually. The trays are 14-3/8" square and 1-1/4" high. Their condition is very good; only minimal scuffs are present and are difficult to discern. Close inspection also reveals intricately detailed scales on the fish. Probably Showa period, ca. mid-century.

Japanese mid 20th century pair of lacquer KOI and lacquer stand. The large carp is done in black lacquer and the smaller carp is done in red lacquer. The pair of carp are on a stand made of the pair. The stand is done in a greenish colored lacquer stand with shell inlaid side. Made by lacquer artist SUMIHIRO KINOSHITA (born 1931). The black carp measures 30" long, 5 1/4" tall and 3 1/4" deep. The red carp measures 26" long, 4 1/4" tall and 2 1/2" deep.
