This is an outstanding set of covered bowls. They're of turned wood and have slightly flared foot and top rim. The exterior is decorated with high relief applied lacquer that matches the wood. Each cover also has a bit of shell inlay. The cover lifts to reveal a dark red lacquer bowl with a gold rim. The cover itself, shaped like a sake bowl, contains an elegant scene with birds above Mt. Antique Japanese suzuri bako calligraphy set. The lacquered wood box dates to the early Showa-Period (c.1940), and features a textured surface finished with scarlet lacquer, in the kamakura-bori style. The top has a depiction of a flowering cherry branch, or sakura. The calligraphy set has likely been augmented throughout the years. This stunning vintage Japanese black lacquer ornamental hair comb (“kushi”) and ornamental hair bar (“kogai”) set is decorated en suite with leaves and flower blossoms. Mid-20th century or earlier. This rare Japanese Kogo (incense case) is in the shape of Pomegranate with dry lacquer "Kanshitsu" tecnique by Shosai Shirai (1901-?). Dry lacquer tecnique used to produce Buddhist images from in the Nara period and Shosai Shirai has done restoration of old Buddha statue. Measurements: 2 1/8" (5.5cm) height, 2 1/8" (5.5cm) wide and 3" (7.5cm) deep. It is in very good condition and comes with original wooden box.

An attractive, well painted Japanese 10" x 6-3/4" lacquer over wood box c1900. This box has a richly painted scene of a bird, tree with flowers and leaves and a curved fence with mountains and a lake in the background. The thickly applied colours include textured black (tree), gold, orange and grey.
