Set of Three Japanese bingata kimono stencils from Okinawa. The Okinawa Islands
in the south of Japan were formally a kingdom known as the Ryukyu Kingdom
with their own distinct culture. The textiles display bold, vivacious
designs and bright colors. They were primarily for the royalty only, until
of late. The first of the set of three is of pine, flowers, grasses and streams. The
second features a gorgeous mix of plum blossoms and pines while the last

Antique Japanese silver deer pair signed by Hayashi Manjujin, c.1950. He was recognized by the government 50 years ago as an important metal artist and is from Hiroshima. He is known for metal sculptures around the city after the war. This mother - fawn pair is exceptional in its expression and bronze cratsmanship. c.1960. Takaoka bronzes have been famous ever since the Takaoka Clan summoned the seven leading casting experts to its employ in 1611. This antique Japanese bronze flower vase is signed "Yoshitsugu" on the bottom. It has a beautiful color which was achieved by painting a mixture of salt-peter and rice bran on the surface and then heating in a furnace. c.1940. (10" x 7½") (26cm x 19cm). Winner of the 45th Kyoto Kimono Association Prize for Best Art held at Kyoto's famous Hankyu Department Store in 1970. Signed box and signed vase by the artist 'Kozan'. Two lovely carp "koi" playfully swim around each other in stunning raised relief. Carp have been traditional symbols of courage in old Japan. Five Yuzen kimono stencils from Kyoto for rice resist kimono dying. One stencil has large chrysanthemums and wild grasses. Another has repeating 'mokkos' (rhombus) used frequently for family crests; another features fans, butterflies, hawk feather, and swirls. The fourth is repeating patterns of tiny flowers. The last are patterns of huge flowers. All are on persimmons 'kakishibu' treated rice paper and in excellent condition. Fabulous for framing. c.1940. (23" x 17") (58cm x 43cm). EMS Shipping... Vintage bronze Saru, or monkey, sculpture with original box, recently imported directly from Japan. The sculpture bares two identical signature marks, one on the bottom and one near the base on the back. The overall detailing and quality of this piece is exquisite. Unfortunately, I am unable to translate the signature or the kanji written on the box. However, I have it on good authority that the sculpture dates to the mid-Showa period, probably early 1950's. When visitors came to the capital of Kyoto where the Imperial Palace (Gosho) was housed, a Gosho Doll was a must souvenir to take home. This antique Japanese ceramic doll is elaborately decorated with cranes. The gold cap has a red rising sun symbolizing the empire. A slot in the back for coins means it doubled as a piggy bank. Rare.
