An exceptionally detailed and vibrant four panel screen from the early Showa era, circa 1930. An elongated Japanese pheasant stands between towering hollyhocks, an unfortunate praying mantis clasped in its beak. Chinese bellflowers and fringed pinks balance the dramatic hollyhocks, whose large green leaves and brilliant blooms dominate the landscape.
The scene has been painted with mineral pigments and gofun on silk. There are areas of foxing to the lower left and upper right of the pheasant... Click for details

A Taisho or early Showa period work by the Tokyo nihonga artist Sanyo. The spring foliage of the foreground is immediate and compelling, ushering the viewer into the town. The traditional country village is shown as an enclave of stability in an ever changing environment. The strong lineal definition of the distant, windswept plains almost gives a sense of the earth's tumbling.
The scene has been painted with pigment and gofun on silk. It is in good condition. There is one soft scratch runn... Click for details

Two farmers hauling a laden cart are disappearing toward it, insignificant shapes in the winter landscape.
The scene has been painted with pigments and gofun on silk. It is in good condition with some slight losses of gof... Click for details

This is a classical Nihonga painting dating to the late Taisho or early Showa periods, circa 1930.
The fox, a complex creature in Japanese folklore, is often assocaited with the worship of Inari Daimyojin, a Shinto/folkloric rice diety. Although the origins of this little white fox may lie with the Inari diety, the artist, Uemura Eitaro, has placed it at the center of a delightful Shijo/Maruyama School insprired work. The full moon has been silhouetted with washed ink, wispy green reeds hint... Click for details

A profusion of summer grasses and flowers intermingling with abandon. The graceful orchid, destination of the superbly rendered butterfly, hides self-consciously behind the dancing grasses. The work culminates with the hedonistic rhythms and colors of the large poppies. The work is a virtual cacophony of nature, enhanced by the presence of the frog and butterfly. Painted with pigment, gofun and gold on silk, the work dates to the earlier part of the Showa era, circa 1930. It is in very good cond... Click for details
