Brown ceramic pottery sculpture of two shi-shi fighting. One of the shi-shi has the other’s ear in his mouth. There is very good detailing on this sculpture, especially the face, eyes, mouth, teeth, feet and hair. Condition: Good condition with the tip of one tail missing and one toenail missing. Marks: The number, “790” is painted in white on the bottom of one foot. It is not marked with the country of origin, but appears to be made in the Japanese style. Date: Mid-1900’s Size/Wei... This wonderful Japanese wooden sculpture or carving is of Daruma. Daruma is known as the father of Zen Buddhism and for bringing Buddhism to Japan. This is solid. There is a piece on the top of the head that looks like it may have a holes at one time but they are filled.

A small ceramic okimono of a ko-suzume (sparrow chick) by the artist Matsuta Naoyuki (1899-1995) in the original box from the Sugimoto Tokujiro collection. The bird is crafted in a style as if a block were laid on the table, and large sections chiseled away leaving this tiny okimono behind. Naoyuki was not a ceramic artist, but was, indeed, a world-renowned sculptor, with this piece very much in his style. It measures just less than 3-1/2 inches (8cm) long, 2-1/4 inches (5.5cm) tall.

Stone depiction of a standing Bato (Horse-Head) Kannon Bosatsu, clearly dated to the 16th year of the Showa Era (1942). Line of repair visible across the center of the piece, minor loss to top of perimeter, and overall softening of the lines and contours.
