This is a very nice, large sake jar (tokkuri). It is made of a light brown stoneware clay. It has a greenish-gray glaze (like a soft celadon green), with the rim being a darker green. The glaze is thick and smooth, with the irregular handbuilt texture of the clay coming through. It was made at one of the Matsushiro kilns, located in today's Nagano Prefecture (central Honshu). A handsome small Oribe glaze kogo (incense case) dating from the mid to late 20th century, circa 1950-1985. The kogo measures 1.8" diameter and is 1/5" high. It is in generally good condition with some small chips where the glaze has come off at the edges. A very similar small square kogo is illustrated in the classic reference book:"Oribe" by Takeshi Murayama,Kodansha International, Ltd., 1982 on page 25, plate # 38. That one is Edo period - the one offered is late 20th century.

A cute little Banko pottery teapot with unglazed finish. On the outer sides of the body is a low relief molded design of Hotei and his bag of goodies - surrounded by a score of small children. Signed on the base with an impressed mark that reads "Banko Nippon" - the clay is a greyish tan color and the pot is in excellent condition with no chips or restorations. Mashiko Yaki Oozara (Large Plates), Dia. 12.25" (31.5cm); Vintage production, purchased in 1965. These plates feature patterns from the four seasons: Ume (Plum) for Spring, Shobu (Iris) for Summer, Nekoyanagi (Pussywillow) for Autumn, and Kiku (Chrysanthemum) for Winter. These types of plates were made using molds and then hand-painted as stock items sold in Mashiko in the 1960's & '70s.
