This blue cotton drapery is from a temple. It's about 60" long, including the hanging tabs and approximately 28 feet in length. Interlocking squares inside circles repeat along the length, and one end has kanji characters. There are age spots and discolorations on the fabric which may or may not launder away. These cushions are hand-stitched. A print of floral medallions is framed and backed in green. The green fabric appears to be a combination of blue and yellow, like over-dyed indigo. The cushions measure approximately 19" x 22-1/2"; the size is irregular, as is typical of hand-made pieces. They're about 1.3" thick and quite flexible. Date from Showa or earlier. Cotton workman’s livery coat and two pair of pants. On each of the lapels of the coat the name of a shop in white. On the back the shop logo (the character kichi under a double mountaintop) also in white. All around the hip stylized characters in gray in dye-resist technique. Dark indigo blue cotton. This is a beautiful and simply decorated hanten which is a coat used for daily work or for celebrating at a matsuri, a neighborhood Shinto festival.
Of hand woven, indigo dyed cotton--the cotton being wonderful and thickly woven--this hanten is hand sewn. It is fully lined in a medium shade of indigo cotton.

This is a wonderful, large sized drawstring bag comprised of hand sewn pieces of cotton cloth, some of which are brightly colored kasuri or ikat fabrics. Note the addition of the sashiko stitched katakana script and the depiction of a nice, fat gourd.
The bag is wholly usable or 'displayable' and is in fine shape. Some of the kasuri fabrics are likely from mid-last-century, while some of the more somber striped fabrics can easily date... Click for details
