Stunningly subtle, this intact futon cover is woven from the leftover thread from many different spools which have been knotted together to form one long filament of multi-colored thread, hence the irregular and intermittent progression of color and stripe up and down the panels that comprise this futon cover.
Zanshi is the term for this homespun cloth made of leftover thread, and it speaks so much of the frugal nature of the... Click for details

Constructed of four panels of intensely inky-dark indigo dyed cotton, this noren, or door covering, shows an graphically placed kanji (Chinese character) enclosed in a thick white circle. The white of the resist-dyed kanji is yellowed from age, however the cotton is in fine condition and the indigo dyed cloth is spectacularly dense in color. Note the nine, lighter blue tabs on top, each attached using a wonderful 'X' stitch in thic... Click for details

This is a thickly woven hand spun cotton length, probably a kind of accessory 'collar' piece, by a pilgrim on his arduous trip paying tribute to each temple on a particular sacred mountain, in this case it is most likely Omine san in Wakayama.
The accessory is well-worn and shows the hand-painted bonji characters, a kind of Japanese-style Sanskrit, that more than likely have to do with seed syllables for a 'mantra.' The collar is stamp... Click for details

Free Economy shipping in Continental US This obi is softer than many, both in hand and in colors. The back is black silk, with a woven signature near one end. The scenes are mountains with trees, and a gated temple by water. Notice the boat and the torii gates. About 40% of the length is without scenes; the mauve background with white pattern covers the entire length. Dates from Taisho or early Showa, pre-1960 ... Click for details
