Outer kimono of kasuri (ikat) woven dark indigo-dyed cotton in pattern known as botan-kasuri (peony ikat.) Inner lining is a printed fabric depicting heroic imagery related to Chushingura, the saga of the 47 Ronin; snowy pine trees, helmets, drums, and the retainers themselves. This would have made an excellent kimono to wear on Tango no Sekku (Boy’s Day, which in Japan has recently become the more politically correct “Kodomo no Hi,” or Children’s Day.) Cotton liner features pattern of a crane’s head within hexagons, representing tortoise shells; both crane and tortoise symbolizing long life. A haori is a jacket worn over the kimono when going out. This heavy hat would have been soaked with water before use. The upper part is padded and a face cover hangs just below the little visor. A lined capelet hangs from the padded cap and wraps over the face cloth from both sides so that three layers cover the face to filter smoke and protect from the heat. This piece is nearly square, about 75" x 76" with a center square opening 22" x 23". It's striped heavy indigo on the outside and the inside is covered in kasuri panels. There are a few patches and some mending, but not enough to call it boro. Dates from 19th or early 20th century, pre-1920.
