Japanese Uchikake (wedding gown) with Imperial Carts, flowers and gold color “maku” (outside cloth divider). The divider is used as a street on this gown leading the wagons to the large area at the bottom half. The background colors from the top are orange, light pink to dark gray at the bottom. The liner is red. The condition is excellent, like new.

Japanese silk wedding gown with beautiful embroideries of flowers, cranes and the imperial carts. The fabric of this gown has silver pine branches woven in entirely. Some silver branches almost has the look of the embroidery. This background gave the texture to the gown and a totally embroidered look (much more than shown in the photos). The color changed to a creamy tan color (this also did not show up in the photos) with small areas (collar, front area) changing to a little darker color ... Click for details

A Japanese silk crepe kake fukusa or gift cover, with painted, resist dyed and embroidered design, circa 1930. A drunken shojo dances with a giant sake cup and dipper in front of a wine jar, while a seated shojo claps and sings, all by a lake shore. The cream silk has been tinted gray and blue, the figures, reeds and wine jar have small bits of gold thread embroidery as accents. The obverse is orange silk crepe. A Japanese gift cover or kake fukusa, heavy cream silk and gold thread, embroidered with cranes and pines, circa 1930. The cranes rock details and young pines have satin stitch and the water and clouds are couched metal thread. The dark green back has a couched gold thread crest. Measurements are 27.5 X 24.75 inches or 69.8cm X 62.8cm. There are no losses, stains, fading or tears.

A Japanese cream silk small fukusa, or gift cover, circa 1930-1950. Resist and painted with a boy dressed as a Shinto priest, it also is subtly shaded with peach tones around the young pines and the boy. It measures 14.5 X 13.5 inches or 37cm X 34cm. The back has a paulownia or kiri crest. There are no tears, fading or losses. There is a small 1cm mark just below the clouds, visible in the first image.

The interior, visually more interesting than the exterior, is made of hand loomed, safflower-dyed cloth on the shoulders and arms. The rest of the interior is fashioned of large pieces of fabric (mostly machine loomed) sewn in great, bold applications allover. The result is very graphic. Fine painted silk and gold leaf make an extraordinary child's kimono. This kimono has a full silk lining and the sleeves are double-lined, making it seem almost padded. It was for a portrait and displays the family crest, or mon, as well as many cranes and a ceremonial figure (also wearing a kimono with cranes) under a pine bough.
