This is a cotton jacket worn by ascetic Buddhist yamabushi--literally 'mountain warriors'--for spiritual training on Mount Omine, in the border area between Wakayama and Nara Prefectures, near koya-san (the center of esoteric/Tantric Buddhism in Japan), founded by Kukkai, also known as Kobo-daishi.
The area around Omine-san was a favorite haunt of Enno-gyoja, an ascetic 'superman' of the Nara Period; there are many legends about h... Click for details

A very unusual, complex and beautiful boro fragment. A techincally complicated kasuri (ikat) technique was employed to weave kanji (Chinese characters) into this cotton indigo cloth: the clarity with which they are woven and the naturalistic brush stroking they imitate is really remarkable. Equally wonderful is the insistent, vertical patching on this fragment, which was taken from what must have been a futon cover or futongawa.

This intensely and expertly sashiko stitched apron is a tour-de-force of this technique. The allover stitching is done with supremely fine regularity and precision, the difficulty made even steeper by the relatively small pattern. The pattern shown is the sayagata pattern, a tradtional Chinese pattern adopted by the Japanese and quite often used as a design motif. The nexus of the pattern is the Buddhist swastika which radiates outward i... Click for details

Wonderfully coarsely yet laxly woven, this hemp kaya, or mosquito netting is dyed in indigo then overdyed with a yellow dyestuff, presumably the kihada dye, obtained from tree bark.
This green color is standard-issue for asakaya, and this panel culled from a larger pieces shows one, lone patch at the upper right corner, machine-stitched.
A lovely, simple, 'boro' piece.

This cotton yutan or furniture cover is huge; it is the size of a queen-sized bed cover. It is massive and wonderful with stell blue/grey/green color: hand stitched and with four tabs of scarlet red chirimen (crepe) silk, the color of which contrasts beautifully to the fabric, there are two symmetrical, large mon, or family crests which dominate the design and seem to be stylized bamboo shoots.
The cotton fabric of th... Click for details

folded dimension: 29" x 25", 74 cm x 63.5 cm
This is almost ethereally beautiful in its pale tones and its paperweight silk. This very unusual boro piece is created from piecing together fragments of extremely delicate shibori dyed silk culled from obi age, or a kind of very delicate silk 'scarf' used as padding and is stuffed under ones formal obi.
The pale tones that comprise this piece are faint in color, very quiet. It seems that this beauty was destined to... Click for details

Pristine condition and beautifully colored, this sakkuri, or work vest is woven from torn strips of indigo dyed cotton which is set against an asa (hemp) warp; this work vest, is most likely from Fukui Prefecture (see a similar example in "Riches from Rags: Saki-ori & Other Recycling Traditions in Japanese Rural Clothing", pp. 40, 41, 42, 43).
