This bag is pieced of wonderful, hand loomed cotton fabrics--21 pieces in all--and when seen in person, its large size is impressive as is its warmth and human presence. This is a bag that has been used--note the hand-sewn name tag on the piece, shown in detail photos.
Very earthy, very much belonging to old Japan, this is a really exceptionally good bag of this sort, and highly recommended.

This is a marvelously earthy bag made from four scraps of hand loomed cottons. The subtle striped cotton fabric of the body of the bag, the medium-blue gauzy cotton of the top trim, and the fabulously faded disc of plaid cloth at the bottom are all very indicative of the humilit and simplicity of Japanese folk textiles.

Beautiful. This han juban, or half under kimono, is made from a deeply dyed indigo shibori from the Eastern part of Japan, notably the Akita region, which is known for this sparse, white-on-deep blue shibori. The pattern of this shibori is sprays of flowers and falling pine needles.
The patching and mending to this garment is just beautiful: note the contrasting pattens and colors and the large panel of woven cloth reinforcing the n... Click for details

This is a wonderfully colored child's kimono, woven in a kind of commercially dyed and produced silk called meisen. Outstanding is the bright orange stitching running up the back of the kimono, to which are tied two small paper knots. This stitch is called semmamori and it is meant to protect the wearer from harm: in this case, on this garment, this semmamori is particularly wonderful.
Lined in olive green, this kimono shows no wear wha... Click for details

This vest was worn by a pilgrim who visited a circuit of sacred temples; each of the twenty stamps of this vest (some quite faint) was received upon visitation to a temple; the hand written kanji (Chinese characters) on this vest most likely is a sutra and was written by a temple priest.
Most likely this vest comes from the pilgrimage circuit on Shikoku Island where 88 sacred sites are visited by the devout.
