Antique and vintage sakabukuro, or sake straining bags--the material from which this sitting cushion is made made--are in themselves highly collectible in Japan and abroad. This wonderful zabuton is made from a beautifully earthy, dark sakabukuro, whose fabric is cotton dyed in green persimmon tannin or kaki shibu. The end result is a very rich, leathery cloth.
The zabuton is stuffed with cotton batting and th... Click for details

This richly colored, densely textured and thickly woven sakiori obi is woven from recycled and shredded cloth: in this case it appears that a deep brown colored kasuri (ikat) kimono was used to create the weft yarn for this obi.
On one side of the piece there is some evidence that there were lateral folds to the length of the piece as the obi shows some very light wear; the other side does not show any distress. This obi is in fine... Click for details

Beautiful inside and out, this han juban, or half under kimino, is made of indigo dyed, stencil resist dyed cloth known as katazome. A precisely cut stencil is placed on cloth; rice paste is squeegeed through. The cloth is then treated and dyed and the rice paste is washed away, leaving a figured cloth; katazome gained great popularity in the late Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries in Japan.
This piece shows the ship... Click for details

This sakiori obi is dense, beautifully colored and nicely textured. The rags which comprise the weft are of good color and are well-woven. The warp is striated with color: the grey, black and orange cotton warp fibers lend color interest to this very good obi.
Obi such as this were most likely produced in the second quarter of the Twentieth century. This one has survived in near-perfect condition and is a very fine example o... Click for details

This sample book shows 96 different silk color swatches on 9 pages: the colors in this book can be thought to be highly sophisticated in that most of them are muted, dense and dull, but not dull in the boring sense, but in the spectral sense. The colors are a joy to look at for this reason: most of the colors are quizzical: is it green or is it grey or is it grey-green-khaki? Very unusual and for those who enjoy color, this is a very refin... Click for details
