late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century
55" x 47", 140 cm x 119.5 cm
An impressive shibori woman's yukata, this piece is made of hand spun, hand woven cotton, nicely thick and toothy in the hand. It shows the tatewaku, or rising steam, pattern, however in this case the pattern is tilted on the diagonal which is an unusual variation to the its standard verticality.
Dyed in indigo using the shibori or shape resist method, the watery blue field of pattern is done in the miura technique, whi... Click for details

Seemingly unused, this small, silk child's kimono seems to be a kind of meisen silk, a commercial form of silk that was popularly used to make every day kimono starting in the Meiji Era through the mid Twentieth century. Meisen silk is usually regularly woven with an even surface whereas this piece shows some irregularity and slubs, which is not common in meisen silk.
The pattern is a kind of chain pattern, the technique is a kin... Click for details

The old one has sashiko ( quilting by hand ) but this one is machine woven and thought to be relatively young. In excellent condition and wearable ( reversible ). 54" x 12 1/2", 137 cm x 32 cm
This is a wonderful, hand woven length of cotton dyed in bengara, or iron oxide dye: bengara is a distinctive brick-red color that is used as a dyestuff and is also used to color wall 'plaster' in Japan: the exterior walls of the famous Ichiriki teahouse in Kyoto, for example, are of bengara plaster. Bengara is Japanese adaptation of the word 'Bengal', referring to the Indian place name.
The horse lead here appears to be a s... Click for details

This is a pair of gorgeously rustic, beautifully colored, thickly woven, indigo dyed cotton tabi, clearly made for hard work. The cotton is dense and the construction of the tabi show that not only was the pair intended to be put to rough use, but they have been used. The applied tab over the instep of the tabi seems to have been put there to guard against inevitable wear. The tabi close up the back using a neat vert... Click for details
