This is a beautiful child's cotton kimono, lavishly hand painted: the blue of the kimono is the clear, open sky which is studded with twenty-three soaring cranes: each one white with a scarlet cap of feathers. The hemline is painted very elaborately with a winding brook, a picturesque pine tree surrounded by bamboo, and soft mountains in the distance. Often you can see cotton flannel remnants recycled and used to reinforce the collars of juban (undergarments) or noragi (work coats); sometimes you see the occasional flannel (or in Japanese neru) patch on a boro futon cover.
This is a wonderfully odd garment, composed entirely of cotton flannel showing th... Click for details

I think these are the fattest little babies I ever seen. A very light weight silk woman's juban lined with an equally light weight, white silk lining, it measures 48" across the shoulders (including sleeves) and 50" long. In very good condition, it dates early Showa, 1930, though the collar appears to be newer. This is a very cheerful under garment and would be a fun piece to wear as an outer garment.
