A classic master carving in ivory tusk from Burma ca. 1950 AD. Central row has 8 adult elephants, on each sides we have 10 baby elephants all in different postures. This carving depicting the "Hathi" elephant motive was one of the acknowledged figures to be able to master, before graduating from craftsman to expert master carver. L: 29,5 cm or 11.5", diameter: 2.5 cm or 1". Ivory is pre-ban.

A superb Thai seal, with a registered company name in 3 languages, Thai, Chinese and English. Has a dark patinated metal knob on one side of the handle. Well aged ivory and traces of frequent use, the seal image seems to be in fine condition. Traces of the red ink used. Probably from the 1930-1950'ties, but could be older. This is a classic Jawa Demam from handle from Sumatra. Jawa Demam translates as " sick or feverish Javan ". While many have speculated on the origins of this type, it is clear that they derive from a human form, most likely a rakshasa of a type commonly found in the Cirebon area of Java. The form may have been simplified to conform to the Islamic prohibition of depicting the human form. The ivory on this piece has a wonderful deep patina and slight wear from over 100 years of use.
